Bill Would Strengthen State's Distracted Driving Laws

A bill that would strengthen Pennsylvania's distracted driving laws is making its way through the state House. The bill aims to limit the use of handheld cellphones while driving, a move that lawmakers hope will reduce accidents and improve road safety.

The House Transportation Committee voted 19 to 6 in favor of the bill, which was previously passed by the Senate. The bill would prohibit drivers from using cellphones and other handheld devices while operating a vehicle. However, drivers would still be able to use their phones through a Bluetooth connection or a speaker.

The bill's primary sponsor, Senator Rosemary Brown, said, 'Cellphone usage has become an addictive and consistent distraction for drivers, posing a significant public safety concern for our roadways. I'm grateful for the House Transportation Committee's bipartisan support for this bill as we work together to prevent crashes associated with distracted driving. I remain committed to advancing our collective mission for a safer Pennsylvania. This bill is meant to help drivers change behaviors – not harm drivers.'

If the bill becomes law, drivers caught using a handheld device while driving would face a $50 fine. However, only written warnings would be issued during the first year the law is in effect.

The bill now moves to the full House for consideration. Senator Brown encourages Pennsylvania residents to reach out to their local members in the House of Representatives to voice support for the lifesaving legislation
