Government shutdown may delay IRS from processing tax refunds

  • If you are counting on a tax refund this year you might have to wait awhile. The government shutdown may lead to a delay in IRS refund processing.
  • The IRS is one of the many agencies that has been affected by the shutdown which began back on December 22nd.
  • The IRS isn’t totally closed but currently, only about 12% of their staff is working.
  • Despite the shutdown, the deadlines for filing and paying taxes will remain the same however due to the lack of staffing the process of issuing refunds, which is considered a “non-excepted activity” (meaning it is non-essential to day to day operations), may be delayed especially if this goes into Feb.
