President Donald Trump has nominated Doug Mastriano, a Pennsylvania State Senator, to serve as the U.S. ambassador to Slovakia, as announced on Monday (May 11). Mastriano, who has represented Franklin and Adams counties since 2019, expressed his gratitude for the nomination on X, formerly known as Twitter. He stated, "I am deeply honored and humbled by President Trump’s nomination to serve as United States Ambassador to the Slovak Republic. Upon Senate confirmation, I look forward to representing our nation abroad, strengthening the friendship between our two countries, and advancing the interests of the American people."
Mastriano plans to continue his duties as a state senator while awaiting Senate confirmation.
The nomination comes alongside that of Kari Lake, another Trump ally, who has been nominated as ambassador to Jamaica. Both nominations require Senate approval. Mastriano's appointment could affect a write-in campaign in Pennsylvania’s Republican gubernatorial primary, where he was a potential candidate.
His appointment will require confirmation by the U.S. Senate, a process that will determine his future role as ambassador to Slovakia.
