Arsonist Pleads Guilty to Attack on PA Governor's Mansion

Cody Balmer, 38, has pleaded guilty to charges related to an arson attack on the Pennsylvania governor's mansion in Harrisburg. The incident occurred on April 13, when Balmer attempted to kill Governor Josh Shapiro by setting the residence on fire. Balmer faced charges including attempted murder, terrorism, and over 20 counts of arson. He could face a sentence of 25 to 50 years, according to Local 21 News.

Surveillance footage released by the Dauphin County District Attorney's Office shows Balmer scaling the mansion's fence and throwing a Molotov cocktail through a window. Governor Shapiro, his family, and over 20 others were asleep inside at the time. Balmer later called 911, stating his actions were in protest of the governor's policies regarding the Palestinian people.

Governor Shapiro addressed the incident in a press conference, describing the attack as a life-altering event for his family. He expressed gratitude for the legal outcome and the work of District Attorney Fran Chardo, who offered the plea deal that Balmer accepted. The governor also highlighted the ongoing emotional and physical recovery from the attack, as reported by Local 21 News.

The attack has heightened concerns about political violence and security at the governor's residence. The mansion is undergoing repairs, serving as a constant reminder of the incident.
