It was a busy morning for firefighters in Northampton County. Crews were called to a home in the 100 block of Stark Street in Northampton around 5 o'clock this morning. We're being told the home sustained severe damage. There are no reports of any injuries.
A Northampton County home has been severely damaged by a weekend fire. The fire happened Sunday in a home on Colony Lane in Plainfield Township. There is no word of any injuries or a cause.
A teenager is in custody following a shots fired incident in Allentown last week. Police say a 14-year-old fired gunshots at a group of juveniles near North 15th Street and Turner on Thursday. No injuries were reported. The teen is facing multiple charges including aggravated assault.
The annual Workers Memorial Day ceremonies were held Sunday morning at the Bethlehem Rose Garden. They honored workers who lost their lives to workplace accidents in the last year. Seven names were added to the Lehigh Valley Workers' Memorial. More than 4,300 are part of the memorial, dating back to before the Civil War.
Bernie Sanders is bringing his Fighting Oligarchy Tour to the Lehigh Valley. The Vermont Senator and former Democratic presidential candidate has announced a stop at Lehigh University this Saturday. Sanders has traveled to several states since the start of President Trump's second term in office to speak out against the influence of wealth and corporate interests in U.S. government. He will be joined by Pennsylvania Congressman Chris Deluzio for the rally in Bethlehem along with the event in Harrisburg on Friday.
It will soon be time for cardinals from around the world to elect the next pope. DeSales University Dr. Kevin Nadolski says, assuming nobody wins election on the first vote, there will probably be a bit of politcking going on. "In between there's 'murmuring' with the cardinals talking amongst each other and saying this guy got this amount of votes, can he get more, or, this guy has got a gift and fits a better need that we have and then it proceeds to another ballot," Nadolski says. The longest conclave was two-and-half years from 1268-to-1271 when Pope Gregory X was finally chosen. The shortest papal conclave on record lasted only one day, electing Pope Adrian V in 1276.
Leaders of several Jersey Shore communities are lobbying state lawmakers not to approve a bill that would change beach badge rules. The bill would prohibit a requirement for a beach tag for beach access below the mean high tide line. In a resolution, the Sea Isle City Council says the law would be impossible to enforce. Other municipalities say it would add to confusion over beach access and cost them in revenue. Last summer, a controversy erupted in Belmar after police placed a surfer in a chokehold over a beach badge.
Ahead of today's White House visit from the Philadelphia Eagles, President Trump and Whitehall High graduate Saquon Barkley got to know one another Sunday. Barkley and the President spent some time together at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey and the two later headed to Washington DC on Marine One, after which the President joked about their meeting. "What a nice guy he is. I wanted to race him but I decided not to do it," the President said. President Trump is expected to meet the Eagles mid-to-late afternoon today.
