Governor Josh Shapiro has ordered all flags at public buildings and grounds across Pennsylvania to be flown at half-staff in honor of Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis died early Monday morning due to a stroke. The flags will remain lowered until sunset on the day of his interment, which has yet to be announced.

Governor Shapiro's directive invites all Pennsylvanians to participate in this tribute to the late pope. According to the official Commonwealth of Pennsylvania website, residents can stay updated on flag notifications by signing up for alerts through the AlertPA system.

In addition to the statewide flag-lowering, the Diocese of Harrisburg held a special mass at Saint Patrick Cathedral to honor Pope Francis's memory. The event drew many attendees who gathered to pay their respects and celebrate the life of the beloved religious leader.

Pope Francis, known for his humility and dedication to social justice, was a significant figure in the Catholic Church and beyond. His passing marks the end of a notable papacy that touched the lives of millions worldwide.
