A police officer with the West York Borough Police Department and a gunman are dead after the alleged shooter entered the intensive care unit at UPMC Memorial Hospital and took staff members hostage. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro credited first responders with preventing more deaths. "I know that because they answered the call and ran towards danger, lives were saved," the governor said. The suspected shooter has been identified as Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz. York County District Attorney Tim Barker says the alleged gunman had previous contact with the hospital's ICU earlier in the week for "a medical purpose involving another individual."
Local law enforcement remembering Officer Andrew Duarte after Saturday's tragic shooting at UMPC Memorial. Police and fire escorted the body of Officer Andrew Duarte as he left York hospital Saturday evening. He had been with the West York Borough Police Department since June of 2022. Prior to that he worked five years at the Denver Police Department in Colorado. Officer Duarte had just turned 30-years-old a week ago on the 17th.
No word yet of any injuries in a late Sunday night accident. It happened just before 11:30 Sunday night in North Whitehall Township, at Route 145 and Clearview Road. Two vehicles were involved in the accident and two people were rescued.
A woman is recovering after being thrown into a garbage truck in Allentown. Officials say a woman was inside a dumpster when it was emptied into a trash truck early in the morning last week. The woman was freed from the truck after becoming trapped- and was then hospitalized with minor injuries. It is unclear how or why she was in the dumpster when the incident happened.
Some mailboxes in Lehigh County have been targeted by thieves. Several people in Upper Macungie Township say their mailboxes were raided overnight Saturday. Residents in the area of Forsythia Lane reported thefts happening at their homes.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is getting ready for trout season. Carl Maiese with the commission says hey havee begun trout-stocking in 691 public streams and 130 lakes around the commonwealth. "Over the next couple of months, we'll be stocking more than 3.2 million trout across the state of Pennsylvania," Maiese says. Trout season begins April 5th.
Tax filing season is well underway. The IRS' Eric Smith says so far, returns have been a bit slower than usual to filter in. "We're a little behind last year, in terms of filings. We're about seven percent behind," Smith says. While the number of returns is down right now, Smith says the amount of the refunds being issued right now is up. That number is just a bit below the $2000 mark, but Smith says history indicates that number will eventually rise to roughly $3000 come April 15th.
The Atlantic City boardwalk is iconic for many reasons and now it has been recognized as the best in the U.S. The honor comes from the venerable entertainment publication called Time Out. The publication notes the Atlantic City boardwalk is not only the first boardwalk in the United States but that it's also next to the Steel Pier, the 300-year-old pier that is packed with popular amusement rides.
New Jersey lawmakers are advancing a bill that would expand e-sports in the state. The bill, which unanimously passed an Assembly committee last week, would allow the state Division of Gaming Enforcement to approve wagering on e-sports occurring at events happening outside of New Jersey. Co-sponsor Assemblywoman Claire Swift says the bill would provide stricter oversight of the growing industry.
