The Allentown School District in Pennsylvania has announced the closure of all its schools today due to a planned political rally by former President Donald Trump at the PPL Center. The decision was made in coordination with the Allentown Police Department and out of an abundance of caution, according to an email sent by the district on Monday. The district cited the expected large crowds, heavy traffic, and potential disruptions that could impact the safety and security of students and staff as reasons for the closure.
In addition to the school closures, the district's administration center and school offices will remain open until 11:30 a.m. today. Administrators, safety officers, facilities services, and 12-month clerical staff are expected to report until that time. All after-school activities and athletic events have also been canceled.
The rally comes on the heels of a controversial event in New York City where speakers at Trump's rally made racist and sexist comments. The remarks have drawn widespread condemnation, including in Allentown, a city where over 33,500 residents identified as Puerto Rican in the 2020 Census.
State police have also issued a warning about anticipated traffic disruptions in Hanover Township and Allentown related to Trump's visit. Motorists should plan for traffic delays and intermittent road closures between 6-10 p.m. today in several areas, including Airport Road in Hanover Township, American Parkway in Allentown, and throughout Downtown Allentown. The Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Authority will also alter its services today in Allentown due to road closures across the region. Lehigh Valley News reports.
