The Allentown School District Board of Directors on Thursday passed a spending plan with a zero-rate tax increase for district taxpayers. It's a $436 million dollar budget.
A 30-year-old Upper Saucon Township man was killed in a Wednesday midday crash on I-78. Edgar Jaimes was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which involved a tractor-trailer, a Honda Pilot and the motorcycle Jaimes was driving. The drivers of the other two vehicles were not hurt. State Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
A man's threats put the Nesquehoniong borough office on lockdown on Wednesday. It began at around 10:30 Wednesday morning when Steven Figueroa called the Nesquehoning Borough Office about his water and sewer services. Police say the 29-year-old was agitated and argumentative and cursed at employees. Soon after the call, the management company for Figueroa's home called the borough and told them he had threatened to go to the borough office with a Glock and start shooting. The borough offices were placed on lockdown until investigators got an arrest warrant for Figueroa, and took him into custody around 1:30 p.m. without incident.
The Lehigh County water system needs almost 600-million-dollars. That's according to the chief executive of the County Authority, who says the cost of upgrading the system will cost 594-million over 10 years. The upgrades are being mandated by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, with old pipes causing ground and rainwater leaks into the system. CEO Liesel Gross says the upgrades are not only required, but needed for growth.
Millions of drivers are expected to travel on the Pennsylvania Turnpike through the holiday weekend. About 5.6-million vehicles are projected to drive on the turnpike from today through July 7th. Turnpike officials say construction will be suspended during this time period to accommodate the increased traffic. There will be an increased presence of state troopers on the road as well.
he National Weather Service is confirming that four tornadoes touched down across Western Pennsylvania during the storms on Wednesday evening. The strongest was an EF2 twister that moved through a section of Westmoreland County south of Delmont to near Shieldsburg and New Alexandria. Meteorologists say an EF1 tornado was spawned near the line between Allegheny and Washington counties, causing damage to trees in North Fayette Township and Oakdale. Another EF1 moved from a spot near North Versailles to Bushy Run Battlefield Park. NWS reports the fourth twister, an EF Zero, touched down near Blairsville in southern Indiana County.
The chief counsel for the Senate Ethics Committee testified in Senator Bob Menendez's corruption trial that he asked about disclosing some gold bars on a financial form. Menendez and his wife are accused of accepting cash, gold bars and a Mercedes in exchange for political favors. The senator said the gold bars belonged to his wife and he wondered about amending his disclosure form in 2020 to report the gold bars. The prosecution is expected to wrap up its case this week.
