Hyundai Elantras have been identified as the most frequently stolen cars in 2023, according to a report by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). The report shows a shift from previous years when full-size pickup trucks were the most stolen vehicles. In 2023, more than 48,000 thefts of Hyundai Elantras were reported across the United States.
The NICB report also revealed that six of the top 10 most stolen vehicles were models from Hyundai and Kia. The surge in thefts of these vehicles began around 2020, coinciding with the spread of TikTok videos demonstrating how to steal these cars.
In response to the increase in thefts, Hyundai set up temporary 'clinics' across the U.S. to provide car owners with software upgrades to enhance vehicle security. Kia implemented similar measures towards the end of 2023.
Despite these efforts, vehicle theft remains a significant issue. The NICB advises car owners to park in well-lit areas, never leave keys in the vehicle, avoid leaving the car running unattended, and keep valuables out of sight. If a vehicle is stolen, it should be reported immediately to law enforcement and the car insurance company.
