School Officials: Later Start Times Would Cause Hardships

(Harrisburg, PA) - State school officials are letting lawmakers know about the hardship they say would be caused by pushing back the start of the school day. House Bill 1848 would mandate that high schools start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. The officials say the challenges include adjusting busing schedules, coordinating after-school activities with other districts and finishing in time for after-school jobs. The Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators has encouraged lawmakers to leave the start time decision to local officials.
