Lawmaker Wants to Require Seat Belts on School Buses

(Harrisburg, PA) -- A House Republican lawmaker has announced plans for legislation that would require seat belts on all new school buses within five years. Currently, the federal government requires three-point seat belts to be installed in buses under ten-thousand-pounds. However, it's left to states and local districts to decide whether or not larger buses should require seat belts. Representative Natalie Mihalek says a bus's design provides the most protection for riders during front and rear-end collisions, but that children aren't well-protected when a bus is hit from the side.
