260 Employees In Georgia School District Had Or Were Exposed To COVID-19

Officials with Georgia's largest school district said that at least 260 employees have either tested positive for or have been exposed to COVID-19 since teachers reported to the classroom last week.

"As of last Thursday, we had approximately 260 employees who had been excluded from work due to a positive case or contact with a case," Gwinnett County School District Sloan Roach said. "This number is fluid as we continue to have new reports and others who are returning to work."

Roach said that the cases were mostly the result of community spread and that many of the sick employees never showed up to work.

"Through tracing, we know that the majority of these cases are the result of community spread, meaning we have people who have called in to report who have not been at school or work," Roach said.

The employees are in quarantine, and the district has not said if the positives tests will delay their plans to begin classes on August 12.

When school resumes, students will learn from home while teachers will be required to be in the classroom.
