President Trump To Call For Unity During State Of The Union Address

President Donald Trump will deliver his annual State of the Union address to a divided Congress on Tuesday (February 5th) night. The White House has said that Trump will call for unity and continue his attempt to convince Democratic members of Congress to fund the construction of a wall on sections of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Kellyanne Conway told reporters that Trump's speech will call for "an end to the politics of resistance and retribution" and she urged people to "listen to the message, not always just look at the messenger."

She said that Trump is not likely to declare a national emergency to secure funding for the border wall. Instead, he will make one last call for Democrats to come to the bargaining table before the February 15th deadline when funding for a multitude of government agencies runs out for the second time.

“The national emergency, if, in fact, he were to execute on that … is because he believes we have a crisis on the southern border and the Congress has failed to do its job,” Conway explained.

To hammer home, his point on securing the border President Trump has invited a human trafficking investigator from the Department of Homeland Security and the family of a Nevada couple who was killed by an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador.

President Trump is expected to call for Congress to work together on fixing America's crumbling infrastructure and offer a plan to reign in the out of control costs of prescription drugs.

“What the administration is saying is we should be working together on these issues,” Bryan Lanza, a former Trump campaign adviser who has been briefed on the speech told the Wall Street Journal, adding that Trump will tell Democrats that if he is "prepared to go forward alone,” if they are not willing to compromise.

He will also use the speech to tout his successes, including the strong economy, low unemployment, especially within minority communities, and his the criminal justice reform bill he recently signed into law.

The State of the Union will begin at 9 p.m. ET and will be aired on all major broadcast networks.
