An investigation is underway after two people were found dead in a home in Bethlehem this past weekend. Officers were called to a home on the 700 block of Redfern Lane Saturday, where the victims were found with gunshot wounds. They have not been identified. Police say there is no threat to the public.
One person is dead following a crash in Bethlehem. Police say the wreck happened yesterday evening at the intersection of Stefko Boulevard and Bayard Street and badly mangled a vehicle. The victim has not been identified. Investigators believe speed was a factor in the crash.
Vice President Kamala Harris has been holding meetings with three candidates to be her running mate, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. The Vice President was also scheduled to meet Sunday with Democratic Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, and Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota. Harris is expected to announce her VP on Tuesday.
A Pennsylvania National Guard Unit is getting ready to be deployed to the Middle East. A ceremony was held at Fort Indiantown Gap yesterday for close to 50 soldiers with the 213th Personnel Company. They are headed to Kuwait and Jordan to help with security in the region. Company commander Captain Joseph Medvec said the unit knows their job and they're well prepared to do it.
Pennsylvania firefighters are headed to the Rocky Mountains to assist with the recent wildfires. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry says wildland crews are being sent out west to relieve another Pennsylvania unit that has been battling the fires. The deployment is expected to last about two weeks.
Oakmont teacher Marc Fogel seems to be distraught as he remains imprisoned in Russia. In a recording of a phone call with Fogel that his family shared with TribLive over the weekend, he said it was "incomprehensible" that he was left out of a prisoner exchange between the U.S., Russia, and other nations last week. He has been incarcerated in a penal colony since August of 2021 after getting stopped at a Moscow airport with a little over half-an-ounce of medical marijuana. State Department officials and President Biden have said they are still working to get Fogel returned to the U.S., but they have not shared any specifics.
A Lehigh Valley Olympian made the podium again this past weekend in Paris. Joe Kovacs won silver in the shot put on Saturday with a final throw of 22-point-15 meters. This is the third-straight silver medal in the shot put for the Bethlehem Catholic alum. Kovacs is also a two-time world champion.
