Wednesday night the Lehigh Valley Phantoms shut out the Hershey Bears in game three of their playoff series. Saturday night, the Allentown Parking Authority is 'shutting out' parking fees in city garages ahead, during and after game four. Free parking will be offered in nine city parking lots near the PPL Center from 4pm to midnight on Saturday. Despite lousy weather, Dorney Park opened for the season Friday. Dorney Park welcomes a new era of thrills with the addition of its new roller coaster, Iron Menace. The opening of Iron Menace marks the first new roller coaster at the park in 19 years. Dorney Park will open seven days a week on May 24.
Planet Fitness is raising its ten-dollar-a-month membership plan for the first time in 26 years. The largest gym chain in the nation will now charge 15-dollars for its "classic" membership starting this summer. It's not raising the price of its 25-dollar monthly "Black Club" membership, which offers perks and access to more locations. Executives at Planet Fitness didn't note why the company is hiking the price by 50-percent for the first time since 1998, but it does come as higher interest rates and construction expenses slow down new gym openings.
State health officials want to include genomic sequencing in New Jersey's newborn blood screening program. Genomic sequencing enables scientists to document a person's entire DNA. Officials say it will take five years to work through the ethical and practical implications of the decision but they say it will help them more accurately screen newborns for disease. They call it an urgent goal as other states are also racing to use the technology for their own newborn screening programs.
