An Allentown swimming pool that has been closed since 2019 will reopen this summer. Irving Pool has been torn down and rebuilt and will be opening for the summer swimming season. It cost $2.7 million to reconstruct the new pool, which will feature a wading area, lap lanes and a whirlpool. The city plans to open the new Irving Poll on May 24. How many days it will be open will depend on the hiring of lifeguards. 20 lifeguards are needed to fully staff the pool. If they can't hit that number, the pool may operate on limited hours until its fully staffed. Two other city pools, Fountain Park and Jordan, remain closed with no opening date in sight. Cedar Beach and Mack pools will also open this summer, on May 25 and June 15, respectively. Unlike Irving, these two pools will be open to anyone, not just Allentown residents.
Sunday's St. Luke's Half Marathon and 5K will force several Allentown roads to close. Among those roads are Linden Street, Broadway, Hamilton Boulevard, Union Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Those closures are all expected from 7:30-11:30 Sunday morning. More than 2000 runners are expected to take part in this year's races.
There's a touch of summer coming to the Lehigh Valley this weekend. Dorney Park is offering up its Preseason Preview Days both today and tomorrow from 11am-5pm. Among the highlights for most will be their first chance riding Dorney Park's new rollercoaster Iron Menace. Dorney Park fully opens for the 2024 season on Friday, May 10th.
A survey from Fairleigh Dickinson University shows a majority of New Jerseyans supports a fee for electric vehicle owners to help pay for the cost of maintaining roads. The proposal is part of Governor Phil Murphy's proposed budget. According to the poll, 59 percent of those surveyed think the tax should support infrastructure projects while 35 percent think New Jersey Transit should receive some of the revenues. The poll was sponsored by the Fuel Merchants Association of New Jersey.
