Employees at a Lower Macungie Township business hope for a more routine day today after having to be evacuated Monday afternoon. State Police were called to Ryder Logistics just after 1 o'clock Monday afternoon after a suspicious package was delivered to the company. A worker opened the package and there was another box inside that had written threats on it. The business was evacuated at that point and parts of Spring Creek Road were also shut down. Investigators searched the complex and eventually determined there was no threat. Spring Creek Road was reopened after about three hours and Ryder Logistics employees were allowed back in the building around 6:30 last evening.
One man is dead and another under arrest after a death in Lehighton. Police were called to a home on Carbon Street for a report of an assault around 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon. When they arrived, they found a 59-year-old man with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. This man is a neighbor. "I was relaxing upstairs and heard sirens. I came outside and saw cops and a K-9 there. It was crazy," the man said. According to investigators, 30-year-old Zak Moyer, of Lehighton, is in custody, and there is no threat to the public.
A Northampton County committee has held its first meeting on election integrity. Its members were assigned after voting machine complications arose twice at county elections over the past four years. The Election Integrity Committee is comprised of John Goffredo, Tom Giovanni, Ron Heckman and council President Lori Vargo-Heffner. Northampton County Executive Lamont McClure has pledged to give all voters the feeling of "maximum confidence" that voting in the county is conducted in the safest and most accurate way possible.
Dorney Park has released the first video of an on-ride point-of-view from its new coaster, Iron Menace. Engineers say they have not yet tested the hold element on the dive roller coaster that will leave riders suspended for 3 seconds. The coaster completed its first test run last week and is set to open with the 2024 season.
Pennsylvania lottery officials say a Powerball ticket recently sold at a Monroe County store hit for $100,000. The ticket sold at M&S Tobacco Outlet on Route 940 in Mount Pocono matched four of the five white balls drawn, plus the Powerball, in Saturday night's drawing. No one hit the jackpot that night and no one hit it last night either. The estimated top prize for tomorrow night's Powerball drawing is $856 million.
We know who's renovating the 29,000-square-foot governor's mansion in Harrisburg, but that's about all we know at this point. The de la Torre Design Studio in New York City has been hired by Team Pennsylvania for the project. Team Pennsylvania is a Harrisburg-based nonprofit and whose investors include corporations from the state's biggest industries. The group is not required to publicly disclose its donors and at this point has not said who's managing the project, how much it will cost or who exactly will pay for it.
Pennsylvania residents and others around the state this week will have the chance to begin the bidding in an online auction of unclaimed merchandise. State officials say the items going up for bids include jewelry, currency, precious metals and other items that have gone unclaimed in the state treasury's vault for three years or more. Monday, the Phillies unveiled all that will be new at Citizens Bank Park this season. Among them, new food choices like the Schwarberger 2.0 and a new bratwurst sandwich. Vonnie Negron is executive chef with Aramark and he says it's his job to give Phillies fans what they want. "Phillies fans are very vocal about what they like and what they don't like, so we've gotta please every fan who walks in the door," Negron says. One thing that won't be at the ballpark this year is the out-of-town scoreboard in right field. That's been replaced by a new video board that stretches from right field into right-center field.
A truckload of Jaromir Jagr bobbleheads, stolen earlier this month, has been recovered. Plans to give out the figures at a Penguins promotional night March 14th at PPG Paints Arena were derailed when the bobbleheads were stolen. Team representatives yesterday announced that the Jagr bobbleheads were located last week and have since made their way to Pittsburgh. Fans who were given a voucher in place of their bobblehead will be able to pick up those figures in April.
