We still don't know who the next Speaker of the House will be, but we know it won't be Pennsylvania Congressman Dan Meuser. He dropped out of the running Monday and says he did so because he believes it's in the best interest of the Republican party. "I've got more faith now than I've had in the last two weeks. We're going to stop the nonsense. We're going to get a fresh start. We're going have respect for members, not be holding grudges and get the job done," Meuser says. Meuser also cited commitments like leading former President Donald Trump's campaign in Pennsylvania as his reason from dropping out. Meuser says he doesn't know who he'll endorse for speaker yet.
Authorities were able to retrieve more than $115,000 a Salisbury Township man lost in scam as he was selling his home in March. The man says he had been dealing with a legitimate title agency during the home sale but was contacted by a scammer using a nearly identical email address, and ended up wiring more than $115,000 to a Capital One account, which was not connected to the legitimate title agency and had previously been frozen by Texas authorities. A search warrant was issued and that eventually led to the return of the money.
The Lehigh County coroner says 28-year-old Milagros Fonseca was the woman killed in a fire that began around 6:30 Sunday morning at 915 North Penn Street in Allentown. Four other residents were taken to the hospital, two of whom were treated and released. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries. Four homes were left uninhabitable and eight homes overall were damaged.
A third person is dead following a fiery crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Montgomery County. The crash happened Saturday morning when a tanker truck crashed into two vehicles on the side of the highway. Police say two people died at the scene and a third person has since died. The identities of the victims have not been released.
In mid-September, Gov. Josh Shapiro issued an order that automatically registers everybody to vote when they renew their drivers license or receive it for the first time. Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt updates what that decision has meant for the voter rolls. "Since September 19 of this year, AVR has resulted in 11,303 new voter registrations," Schmidt says. He says that's about 4000 more voter registrations than through the state's motor voter program back in a comparable 2021 election cycle.
The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board will soon offer a Limited-Release Lottery for the chance to purchase nearly 45-hundred bottles of rare whiskeys. Pennsylvania residents and licensees will have until 5 p.m. Friday to opt in to the lottery by visiting the web page at FWGS-dot-com. This event will feature six products in five lotteries. Purchase is limited to one bottle per participant per lottery. Only one entry per household per lottery is allowed and duplicate entries will be disqualified.
New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez is pleading not guilty to a conspiracy charge that alleged he acted as a foreign agent on behalf of Egypt. Menendez is accused of using his position as Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to act as a foreign agent from 2018 to 2022. Federal prosecutors contend New Jersey's senior senator sent military aid to Egypt so his wife Nadine could get a no-show job. Menendez stepped down as chair of the committee last month but has so far refused to resign. He and his wife are charged with accepting gold bars, cash, and a Mercedes from three New Jersey businessmen in a reported widespread scheme.
The Diamondbacks beat the Phillies 5-1 in game six of the National League Championship Series Monday night and that means the Phillies and D-Backs will play game seven tonight. Phillies manager Rob Thomson explains his approach to the biggest game of the year. "I think you just have to come in here like it's any other day and be loose, be relaxed and go play your game," Thomson says. Tonight's game seven is the first in the Phillies' 140-year history. Tonight's winner will play Texas in the World Series after the Rangers blew out Houston 11-4 to win the ALCS in seven games.
