The search for nine juveniles who escaped from a juvenile detention center in Berks County is over. "Now we have all nine of them in custody and they're not out there anymore," says State Police spokesman David Boehm. He says four turned themselves in and the other five were apprehended after allegedly stealing a vehicle near the Abraxas Academy in Morgantown. Investigators say the juveniles overtook two female staff members during a riot at the prison Sunday evening and stole the keys to the door and escaped. One of the staff members suffered minor injuries.
Last month, the Hotel Bethlehem was voted America's No. 1 Best Historic Hotel. That's the Hotel Bethlehem's third straight title. The three years before that, Peabody Hotel in Memphis earned the honor. Hotel Bethlehem owner Bruce Haines says that sets up a showdown next year. "Next year is the World Series, the seventh game of the World Series, and we hope we're going to win the World Series," Haines says. Over the weekend, the Hotel Bethlehem threw a celebration for the community to thank them for voting them number one.
Easton's Zoning Hearing Board will review two projects today that combined would add 522 homes to the city. A residential midrise with 412 apartments at 300 Morrison Ave., near the border with Forks Township is planned and at 301 Grant St., on Easton's South Side, 110 units are proposed.
Campaign managers for Republican David McCormick say he'll announce his candidacy for the U.S. Senate Thursday in Pittsburgh. He hopes to challenge Democrat U.S. Senator Bob Casey, who will be seeking a fourth six-year term. McCormick ran for Senate last year as well, but lost an extremely tight primary race against Dr. Mehmet Oz. State Republicans believe him to be their best bet to beat Casey in 2024. Just as in 2022, the Senate Race in Pennsylvania is again expected to be among the most closely-watched in country and could determine which party holds a majority.
The sister of a prison escapee who led authorities on a two-week manhunt may soon face deportation. Eleni Cavalcante was reportedly taken into custody by U.S. officials over the weekend after she is said to have refused to help them during the search for her brother, Danelo. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say she'd overstayed her visa anyway. The siblings are originally from Brazil.
Majority control of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives will again come down to a special election. The balloting Tuesday in Allegheny County pits a former Democratic congressional staffer against the daughter of two local officials who were politically active. Democrat Lindsay Powell, who is 32, and Republican Erin Connolly Autenreith, who is 65, are facing off for the 21st District House seat. The voting tomorrow comes one week before the House will return to floor sessions in Harrisburg.
Democratic Senator Bob Casey has asked the Department of Education to restore federal funding for hunter safety and archery courses in schools. The plea came in a letter sent by Casey and a group of bipartisan lawmakers, as well as a separate one sent with Senator John Fetterman. Senator Casey says he's trying to restore funding that was taken out of the federal schools budget after what he calls "misinterpreted language" in the Safer Communities Act. That measure was signed into law after mass school shootings in Texas and New York. Casey says hunting is a way of life in Pennsylvania and learning to do hunt safely is crucial for young people.
Pennsylvania's John Fetterman is joining striking UAW workers in Michigan: The Democratic Senator posted on social media that he drove from his home to Michigan over the weekend to join picketers who are protesting after their union contract expired last Thursday. Fetterman joined his Senate colleague Gary Peters, who represents Michigan, on the picket lines.
Officials have released the cause of death for a Jersey Shore high school football player who collapsed during a game. Max Engle died Friday at Geisinger Medical Center near Danville, a week after he collapsed on the field near the end of the Bulldogs' game at Selinsgrove. Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn says he died from an intracranial hemorrhage that was the result of blunt force head trauma. Scott says he can't yet say whether the injury occurred during the Selinsgrove game or if it came previously. His investigation is on-going.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is calling on federal lawmakers for comprehensive immigration reform. "It's not that hard, but you've never believe that looking at it from the outside," Murphy says. As neighboring New York deals with an influx of asylum seekers, Murphy says new arrivals have swelled into the Garden State. The Democrat said immigration policies should include securing the US/Mexico border and a pathway to citizenship for the roughly 20-million people already in the United States. He also called for a legal, responsible, job-oriented immigration system.
Charlie Manuel is alert, and doctors are encouraged by his progress, following a stroke he suffered Saturday. The former Phillies manager was undergoing a medical procedure in a Florida hospital when he suffered the stroke. The Phillies said that medical personnel immediately attended to Manuel and removed a blood clot. The Phillies say the 79-year-old Manuel has been listening to audio recordings from former players like Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, Brad Lidge and other, which have lifted his spirits and he watched Sunday's Phillies-Cardinals game on TV.
