We may get an idea tomorrow of what the vacant Allentown State Hospital property may look like down the road. Developers with City Center are planning what they call a "master-planned community" to be called Northridge for the 195-acre property, which has been vacant since the psychiatric hospital was torn down in 2020. City Center is unveiling the plans to the public tomorrow morning at 10 at the East Side youth center at 1140 East Clair Street in Allentown.
A 49-year-old Allentown man is facing charges after punching a man thrown out of a bar, eventually leading to that man's death. Lehigh County DA Jim Martin is charging William Baker with voluntary and involuntary manslaughter and aggravated and simple assault in connection to the incident, which happend on September 29, 2019. Martin says Baker was working security at East Siders on Union Boulevard when Thong Pham was thrown out of the bar after a fight. Baker allegedly punched Pham, knocking him to the ground, where he hit his head and never regained consciousness. Pham died two years later and the coroner determined his death was due to complications of the brain injury suffered in that encounter.
An Easton woman is dead after a crash in Maryland. Police say 36-year-old Elizabeth Velez was killed late Tuesday night and her three children and a front seat passenger were all injured in what's being described as a wrong-way DUI accident on I-495. A Georgia man was reportedly driving the wrong way when he hit Velez's vehicle and as well as a second. Five people in the other vehicle were hurt. Velez was a nurse at St. Luke's University Health Network.
The 60th annual Das Awkscht Fescht begins today in the Macungie Memorial Park. Well over 1000 antique, classic and special interest cars will be shown over the three days, with this year's featured car being the Corvette.
