Some pretty hard thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening in the Lehigh Valley. "Those storms later today could again turn quite gusty and drenching," says Accu-Weather's Bill Deger. Thunderstorms are possible once again Saturday, into Saturday night and right into Sunday.
A jury found an Allentown man guilty of shooting and killing another man in the city. 36-year-old Raymond Gourgue will be sentenced September 27th after being convicted of third-degree murder in the May 2021 shooting death of 43-year-old Jose Bermudez, of Allentown. Bermudez was found shot multiple times in the 100 block of North Hall Street.
Congresswoman Susan Wild raised more than $600,000 for her re-election campaign over the past three months. That leaves her campaign with more than $827,000 banked for her 2024 re-election run. During the 2022 race in the 7th District, more than $24 million was spent by all candidates combined.
A man is charged with allowing the children he was supposed to be watching, to wander without shoe in Hellertown last week. Police say Elvin Mendez-Vazquez was supposed to be watching the two-year-old and four-year-old children when they were found in the area in the 400 block of Cherry Lane about 9:30 on the morning of July 4. A passerby found the children and called police, who were able to return the children to their family. Investigators say Mendez-Vazquez was supposed to be watching the youngsters while their parents were at work.
A Poconos wildlife center has euthanized a golden eagle that was recovering after losing a foot. Pocono Wildlife was told by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service it had to euthanize the bird because the eagle can't be released into the wild with only one foot. Officials with the center feel the eagle shouldn't have been euthanized and say three different vets have said the eagle didn't need to be euthanized. However, the center says if they didn't follow through with the federal order, they could lose their licenses.
Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens has a message for escaped Warren County Prison inmate Michael Burham, who escaped from the prison using bed sheets on July 6th and has still not been found. "You need to surrender. Don't do anything foolish that gets anyone else hurt. Don't get yourself hurt. We are going to capture you. We are going to bring you back to the criminal justice system and this just needs to end," Bivens says. While Burham was behind bars for other crimes, he is also suspected of killing a woman in New York.
After less than two hours of deliberations, a Pennsylvania jury has found the Pittsburgh Tree of Life synagogue shooter is eligible for the death penalty. Robert Bowers was convicted last month of killing eleven people in the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in U.S. history in 2018. The government wants the death penalty for Bowers and now the jury will hear evidence to decide if Bowers will be sentenced to death or life in prison. Bowers allegedly told investigators after being arrested that he wanted to murder Jewish people.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is unveiling a Governor's Playbook to strengthen youth mental health. He outlined a plan yesterday during the opening session of the annual National Governor's Association meeting. The four-pronged playbook includes addressing prevention and building resilience, increasing awareness, ensuring those who are bullied have access to treatment, and providing training for caregivers or educators. Murphy says America's youth mental health crisis is complex, but the guide suggests 35 policies and contains examples of successful initiatives.
