Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused a big Memorial Day fire in Easton. 15 rowhomes were damaged in the fire that began around 3:30 Monday afternoon at Ninth and Ferry streets. Kevin Maxwell's home was damaged, but he tells WFMZ he's relieved he was able to salvage the American flag presented to him at his father's funeral. "I feel grateful. At least if I had to lose something, my father's flag...I'm glad I didn't lose that," said Maxwell. No residents were injured in the fire, however a handful of firefighters had to be treated at the scene for heat exhaustion.
Accu-Weather's Joe Lundberg says there's no rain being added to an anemic rainfall total for the month of May. "It's very, very dry. We need rain badly. We've had .24 for the entire month and we're going to end the month with .24, the second driest May on record. I think the driest May ever .09 in 1964," Lundberg says. He says there's just an outside chance of a little rain this weekend, but he calls it unlikely.
Nearly five years after eleven people were shot to death in the Pittsburgh Tree of Life synagogue, the trial of their accused killer starts today. With 12 jurors and six alternates officially seated late last week, proceedings are set to begin in the trial of Robert Bowers. Federal prosecutors are looking for convictions on 63 separate counts in connection with the October 2018 mass shooting. The government plans to seek the death penalty if jurors find Bowers guilty.
State lawmakers from both parties have given unanimous approval to legislation that would eliminate state-run health centers in counties that create their own health departments. State law currently prevents the closing of state centers even if they overlap with a county entity. The centers track diseases, offer shots and make home visits, among other services.
Nick Nurse is preparing to become the next coach of the Philadelphia 76ers. Nurse helped the Toronto Raptors win the NBA championship back in 2019. Doc Rivers was fired by Philadelphia after losing in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
