Lehigh University police say an active shooter report over the weekend was a hoax. Police converged on Lehigh University around 10 o'clock Sunday night for a report of an active shooter in the area of West Packer and Webster streets. At that point, Lehigh issued an advisory telling everyone on campus to either leave or hide. Minutes later, the university released a statement saying a threat was not detected, but students were told to shelter in place. Finally, less than ten minutes later, Lehigh said Bethlehem police and university police had completed their investigation and no threat was found and all campus operations were cleared to continue as usual. Authorities have not yet said if they know who made the report or if there will be any charges filed.
A motorcyclist has died in a crash on Route 248 in Carbon County. It happened around 4:30 p.m. Sunday on the exit ramp into Palmerton. Officials say the motorcycle was the only vehicle involved. The identity of the person killed has not yet been released.
Two local firemen were remembered over the weekend at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial. The names of Marvin Gruber and Zachary Paris were read at the memorial on Sunday. Gruber and Paris were both killed in December while battling a house fire in West Penn Township, Schuylkill County. Their families and three members from the New Tripoli Fire Department attended ceremonies.
Pennsylvania got smaller in the past year according to the U.S. Census Bureau's recent release of its population estimates. Statewide, Pennsylvania's population is estimated to be just under 13-million people as of 2022 - that's about a 40,000 person loss from the year before. Among Pennsylvania's 67 counties, the fastest-growing one since 2020 has been Pike County, where the population grew about three-point-four percent. Cumberland County was the second-fastest. Other counties that saw growth include Adams, Chester and Northampton.
The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services is issuing a scam warning to people who receive public assistance. Officials say the scam involves unsolicited calls or texts that ask for information about EBT cards, Medicaid and SNAP data. They also say the messages are sometimes sent to people who don't get public assistance. The calls and texts indicate that a person's EBT card is blocked and ask for information. Authorities say the real DHS department will never ask for information through random calls or texts. You can report such calls to the DHS fraud tip line.
Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis and his wife Blayre are expecting their first child. The McKeesport native made the announcement on social media on Saturday that his wife is expecting. Davis' message on Twitter read 'we are so excited to welcome our baby girl to our family this September.'
