Doug Mastriano waved the white flag Sunday night. In a Facebook Live message, the Republican conceded the governor's race to Democrat Josh Shapiro. He said, "Difficult to accept as the results are, there is no right course but to concede, which I do, and I look to the challenges ahead. I want to thank everyone out there who voted for us and volunteered," Mastriano said. Shapiro defeated Mastriano by 14 points in last Tuesday's election.
Pennsylvania's Democratic governor-elect says the key to appealing to rural voters is to show up with respect and solutions. "We went everywhere. We showed up in rural, urban, suburban communities. We engaged voters across the board, no matter their part label. We took the same message all across Pennsylvania and won in places where Democrats really had never won before," Shapiro says. Appearing on CNN, Josh Shapiro said offering traditionally conservative rural voters "practical things that would make their lives better" is the best way to reach across the aisle and earn votes from independents and moderates.
It's a tense Monday at Kutztown University after two incidents over the weekend. An 18-year-old from Reading was shot to death inside the Advantage Point Student Apartments early Saturday morning, next to the University. State Police say Diego Velazquez, who was not a KU student, was killed during an altercation at a party. There's no word on any arrests in his death. Then early Sunday morning, Kutztown University police issued a warning after a report of a man with a weapon at the campus entrance at College Boulevard and West Main Street. According to the alert, the person was a passenger in a dark-colored sedan, when fled the scene.
Authorities in North Whitehall Township are investigating a house fire that sent one person to the hospital. Fire crews were called to the 5300 block of Route 309 shortly after 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon. One resident with was taken to the hospital to be treated for burns. The home was heavily damaged.
School officials are encouraging parents and adult guardians to take part in a free, restorative practices meeting this week. The Allentown schools' Office of Family and Community Engagement says adults can learn how to manage conflict and tensions and repair relationships between people and communities. You can also learn how those practices can be used in schools and your own relationships. A session will take place Tuesday night at Hays Elementary School Community Center. Registration is available at the schools' website.
Police across the state have been cracking down on motorists who break the Move Over Law or who drive aggressively. About 300 police departments and Pennsylvania State Police are taking part in the effort. The latest wave of enforcement has focused on speeding, tailgating, and violations of the Move Over Law. That ordinance requires drivers who come upon an emergency response area to either move into another lane or pass the area at no more than 20-miles-per-hour less than the posted speed limit.
A man who for years was known as "Mr. Pocono" has died. The Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau over the weekend announced the passing of Bob Uguccioni. Uguccioni was the bureau's executive director for 40 years beginning in 1967 and worked to promote the area to tourists. Uguccioni, an Air Force veteran, was 87-years-old.
New Jersey's 2022 Hall of Fame induction ceremony is complete. Danny Devito hosted yesterday's event in which one recipient, comedian Chelsea Handler, was introduced by Jon Bon Jovi. Other inductees included drummer Max Weinberg, three-time Olympian for soccer Heather O'Reilly, former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski, and the late Governor Richard Hughes. It was the 14th edition of the annual event.
The Eagles hope to go to 9-0 tonight on Monday Night Football. Defensive end Hasson Reddick says the Commanders are playing better football with Taylor Heinicke at quarterback. "Heinicke is back there right now and they're playing with a little more juice. They're playing better than the last time we saw them," Reddick says. The Eagles beat Washington 24-8 back on September 25th.
