Two shootings, one death in Allentown overnight. Police are investigating a pair of shootings in Allentown overnight, one of which left an unidentified 22-year-old man dead. That killing happened in the 1000 block of Juniata Street. The other shooting happened a couple of miles away in the 500 block of Cedar Street. It appears that shooting was reported late Wednesday night. Police have not indicated whether the two shootings are related.
The former Lehigh University student accused of threatening to come to campus and shoot a group of students is now in custody. 20-year-old Muhammad Diop was taken into custody in New York City without incident. That means campus building access will be restored to regular operations. The university had been on high alert since Diop allegedly threatened the students over the phone Sunday night.
A drought watch has been declared for half of Pennsylvania, including our area. The Lehigh Valley, Poconos, Berks, Bucks, Schuylkill, Monroe and Carbon counties are among the 36 counties under the watch. The state Department of Environmental Protection is asking people in those 36 counties to conserve water, as conditions become increasingly dry.
Boscov's employees will get to enjoy another Thanksgiving with their families. The retailer says it will keep all 49 of its department stores closed for the third consecutive Thanksgiving. Company CEO Jim Boscov said in a news release. "A number of things have changed due to the pandemic. I'm delighted that this change has become the new norm, and hope it will become permanent in the retail industry."
The Great Allentown Fair has opened its traditional Labor Day run. The fair's Jessica Ciecwisz says a dozen entries are vying to be voted the best new fair food. "It ranges from brussels sprouts to guava jelly bar-b-que chicken, to raspberry and peach dumplings, to cheesesteak dumplings to a strawberry funnel cake taco to smores funnel cake on a stick," Ciecwisz says. All participating stands will be marked with a red diamond with a white number inside. The fair runs now through Labor Day Monday.
An Amber Alert issued Wednesday afternoon ended with a Reading teenager found safe in New York City. Reading police Chief Richard Tornielli says 13-year-old Janae Kalia-Henry was specifically targeted by 47-year-old Dwayne Taylor. "We don't believe that this was a random kidnapping. We believe this individual was kidnapped by someone she knew or knew her," Tornielli says. Taylor allegedly kidnapped the girl from her Reading home around 2 o'clock Wednesday morning. Both the girl the Taylor were found in New York City later yesterday. The teen is back home. Taylor is in custody waiting to be sent back to Berks County for arraignment.
UGI customers will see higher prices for natural gas starting today. officials with the utility company say the rate hike will increase the average residential customer's bill to about $115 per month. they blame the increase on higher energy costs around the world from increased global demand.
Pennsylvania lawmakers are considering a law that would require PennDOT to process paperwork in 90 days or else refund its eligible costs. Work that doesn't meet the processing deadline would be eligible for a refund of PennDOT title and registration fees. The number of bear sightings in the Garden State is up this year. News Twelve reports there have 347 thus far for 2022. But in all of last year, the number was 205. Republican Senate Minority Leader Steven Oroho says ending the bear hunt has led to the increase.
