The old Dixie Cup facility in Northampton County is going under new ownership. New Jersey real estate developer Nick Tsapatsaris is planning to purchase the building in Wilson, which produced Dixie Cups from the 1920s to the 80s, but since then has become a bit of an eyesore. Closing on the property is expected in early June. Tsapatsaris says the property will be turned into a logistics center, but he says the iconic water tower on top is staying.
Whitehall Township police officers came under fire early Monday morning. It happened at the Parkview Apartments around 4:30 Monday morning. Police were called to the scene for reports of a disturbance and gun shots. This man saw what happened and says there were four or five police cars at the apartment. "I was hoping nobody got shot because they had guns drawn and pointed at the car," said the witness. Olric James Jr. is the man who allegedly shot at the police officers. He fled the scene, but was arrested a short time later in Allentown. He's under arrest facing multiple charges. No injuries were reported.
An 18-year-old Bangor man was killed in a crash in Northampton County over the weekend. Isaac Cooper was killed when his vehicle hit a phone pole and rolled several times in Upper Mount Bethel Township. The crash was discovered just before 5:30 Sunday morning in front of the Five Points Elementary School. Cooper's was the only vehicle involved. It's not clear what time the crash happened.
A 23-year-old New Jersey woman was struck and killed by a drunken driver in Arizona over the weekend. Norah Bruther was hit by a car early Saturday morning while trying to cross a road in Scottsdale. Bruther played soccer at Moravian University and graduated from there in 2020 with a degree in accounting.
Three people aboard a small plane that took off from the Queen City Airport in Allentown suffered only minor injuries after being forced to make an emergency landing in Schuylkill County. James Bonner is the police chief in West Penn Township and says it's remarkable nobody was hurt worse. "I would have to say it's remarkable how they were able to put this plane down in the field and underneath power lines and miss telephone poles," Bonner says. He says a student pilot, an instructor and a passenger were aboard the plane. Engine failure is being blamed for the close call.
Musikfest's Wind Creek Steel Stage headliners continue to be filled in. Multi-Grammy Award winning Boyz II Men is coming to Musikfest the night of August 4th. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday. Musikfest has yet to announce headliners for two of the festival's 11 day run.
Health officials in New Jersey are noting an uptick in COVID-19 cases. Monday, they reported over 1800 new cases statewide. The New Jersey Department of Health also reported a single COVID-19 related death. Over 30,000 New Jersey residents have died after contracting the virus since the start of the pandemic.
