Six people were taken to the hospital after a Tuesday morning fire in Allentown. It happened around 6am in the 300 block of Washington Street. All six taken to the hospital are expected to recover and their injuries are described as minor. The investigation continues, but the initial belief is the fire started on the first floor.
Police say one person has died after their car flipped over a barrier on I-78 in Lehigh County. The incident happened Tuesday around 1:30 in the morning near Lehigh Street. The Lehigh County coroner says a Brooklyn man died at the hospital. A passenger was also admitted with injuries, although their condition has not been released.
Mask wearing policies are changing at both the bus stop and airport. After a court ruling that blocked a Biden administration mask mandate extension and input from the TSA, LANTA says it's moving to a mask-optional policy for riders and employees alike. Some airports, including Lehigh Valley International Airport, have now dropped their mask mandates. LVIA said masks will no longer be enforced inside transportation hubs and all of the airlines flying out of its airport have suspended their mask requirement for domestic flights.
Members of the Easton Area School Board have approved a new contract for its district teachers. The three-year agreement was given the go-ahead Tuesday night and will become effective July first. In year one of the contract, a starting teacher with a bachelor's degree will earn a little over $58,000. The contract also calls for longevity bonuses for teachers with 20 to 30 years or more of service.
Pennsylvania gas prices continue to head lower. As of Tuesday, Pennsylvania's average price per gallon was $4.17, down two cents from one week earlier, but $1.21 higher than April 19, 2021. AAA East Central says the Lehigh Valley's average price stood at $4.15 a gallon, two cents higher than the previous week and $1.25 more than one year ago.
The Pennsylvania State Police investigated 449 accidents over the Easter holiday weekend. 100 people were injured and four died in those crashes. Alcohol was a factor in 47 of those accidents and caused one death. Troopers made 341 DUI arrests over the Easter weekend.
A jackpot-winning Cash 5 with Quick Cash ticket sold in the Lehigh Valley for Monday night's drawing matched all five balls drawn. That ticket, which is worth $350,000, was sold at Sim's Quality Market on West Broad Street in Bethlehem. The market earns a $500 bonus just for selling the ticket. The holder of the winning ticket has one year to claim the prize.
Officials at Reading Regional Airport say they've been approached by an unnamed airline to offer service to Florida. The airport director says the potential would be for year-round direct flights from Reading to Orlando twice a week on a Boeing 737 aircraft. He says he can't reveal the name of the airline because the proposal is still in the beginning stages.
The state is introducing a new program to tamp down the number of black flies. The Department of Environmental Protection demonstrated its tools to combat the summer insects Tuesday. The program involves aerial and backpack spraying on roughly 1700 stream miles in 36 counties. An organic material called BTI is used in the sprays to suppress the fly population.
