Accu-Weather's Joe Lundberg expects to see snow begin Sunday night. "I'd say no earlier than 7pm, maybe as late as 10pm. But when the precipitation starts, it's going to come down pretty hard, pretty fast and that's why we've got three-to-six inches of snow expected because it's all front-end loaded. Then it changes to ice and then maybe even to plain rain very late Sunday night and Monday morning," Lundberg says. He believes the precipitation will be almost all snow up in the Poconos and could result in six-to-ten inches accumulation there.
A month-long strike at the Coca-Cola plant in Bethlehem could come to an end today. Union officials have reportedly reached an agreement with company management and are expected to hold a vote on it this morning. Union members have been on strike since December. Wages and health care are the main sticking points. Last week the union rejected a different offer from Coca-Cola.
Some Slate Belt residents are being told to boil their water after crews dealt with an industrial fire Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The fire was reported at 11:30 p.m. at Air Liquide on Demi Road in Upper Mount Bethel Township. The fire caused no injuries but tankers apparently used so much water to douse the flames, the Portland Borough Authority reported low water pressure and are advising customers to boil water until further notice. Authority officials that order may remain in place until next week.
Police in Wilson have welcomed a new K9 Officer. Dotan comes to Wilson from Holland. He's three-and-half years old and is trained in tracking, building/area searches, obedience, and apprehensions. He is currently in narcotic detection training and will be able to sniff out cocaine, methamphetamine, LSD, fentanyl, and heroin.
As expected, Dave McCormick, a former official in the George W. Bush administration announced he is running to replace U.S. Senator Pat Toomey. On Fox Business, McCormick called himself battle-tested and Pennsylvania true. "I'm a Pennsylvania kid. I grew up in Bloomsburg. My family had a farm and we bailed hay and trimmed Christmas trees and I played sports and hunted deer and that gave me the opportunity to go to West Point," McCormick says. McCormick served in Iraq and later worked in the Treasury Department in the Bush administration before becoming a hedge fund CEO. While a Pennsylvania native, McCormick only recently moved back to the commonwealth and opponents were already questioning his Pennsylvania credentials before he officially entered the race. There are now ten Republicans and seven Democrats officially in the race to replace the retiring Toomey.
If your student loan has been serviced by the Navient Group, you might be getting part of a settlement. Attorney General Josh Shapiro has announced a nearly $2 billion settlement with Navient, which includes debt cancellation and restitution. "Navient made predatory, sub-prime private loans to students they knew would struggle to pay them back," Shapiro says. Approximately 13,000 Pennsylvania borrowers will receive $3.5 million in restitution payments and another 25-hundred will receive 67-million dollars in debt cancellation.
Pennsylvania State Police says troopers seized more than $72 million in illegal drugs in 2021. That includes more than $9.5 million in the fourth quarter. Police say more than $21 million worth of cocaine alone was seized last year.
A Pennsylvania lawmaker wants to legalize personal use of fentanyl testing strips. St. Rep. James Struzzi is sponsoring a bill, which would no longer classify the testing strips as drug paraphernalia. Struzzi, who recently lost his brother to an overdose, says fentanyl is the number-one cause of overdose deaths in the country.
Starting Monday in Philadelphia, patrons and employees will be required to provide full proof of being vaccinated from COVID-19. The new rule will apply to any public eating place like restaurants, cafes and bars. Public Health Director Cheryl Bettigole says the mandate also includes movie theaters and eateries insides stores or hotels as well as indoor sporting events. Mayor Jim Kenney said the proof of vaccination mandate is meant to decrease the chance of transmission, while preventing a shutdown of indoor dining.
The Pennsylvania Farm Show continues through Saturday. Nate Tallman with the PA Potato Growers Co-Op hopes you visit their stand. "We're serving our famous potato doughnuts. We have pierogies that are new this year. We've added bacon, cheese and sour cream to our baked potates this year. We also have baked sweet potatoes with butter and brown sugar and, of course, french fries," Tallman says.
Women's rights activists and supporters are applauding New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy for protecting abortion rights. The governor signed a pro-abortion measure into law during an outdoor ceremony Thursday. Planned Parenthood New Jersey called it a historic day.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy wants acting Corrections Commissioner Victoria Kuhn to take on the role permanently. He announced his nomination, saying Kuhn has impressed him since taking over the post in June. She took charge after Marcus Hicks resigned when allegations surfaced about violence against inmates at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for women, the state's only prison for women. Kuhn has been very vocal about starting a new chapter for the department, citing new reform and reintegration initiatives.
