The Senate has voted to push ahead with former President Trump's impeachment trial. Six Republicans joined all Senate Democrats in voted to move forward with the trial. Among those six Republicans voting to proceed was Pennsylvania's Pat Toomey.
4088 new coronavirus cases were added Tuesday to Pennsylvania's overall total, which now stands at 876,913. Pennsylvania's Department of Health also reported 149 new coronavirus-related deaths Tuesday, leaving the state 22,620 overall. There are currently 2881 hospitalized for coronavirus, with 565 of them in the intensive care unit.
Pennsylvania's Acting Secretary of Health says progress continues to be made on the coronavirus vaccination front. "Vaccine providers are reporting they have administered 1,352,248 doses of vaccine to 1,049,609 individuals," says Alison Beam. She says more than 302,000 people have received both of their two doses. Beam also announced a new tool to help Pennsylvanians understand where they fall in the vaccine prioritization process and to be alerted when it's their turn to schedule an appointment. New Jersey is reporting just over 3100 additional cases of COVID-19. Gov. Phil Murphy says the case count included some from Monday due to a technical issue that affected laboratory reporting. Health officials also confirmed 92 deaths related to the virus.
New Jersey officials are brainstorming ways to reach the Black community with information on the coronavirus vaccine. Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver said she thinks a grassroots campaign is the way to go when it comes to informing residents about the importance of getting vaccinated. That means going into small businesses like barber shops and hair salons and connecting with community members, especially older people, who aren't as tech savvy.
New Jersey's Office of Homeland Security is busting myths when it comes to the coronavirus vaccine. The agency says various entities are leveraging pandemic fears and knowledge gaps to spread disinformation and rumors, like the COVID-19 vaccine can be fatal, it will alter your DNA, or it will actually give you the virus. The agency says the vaccine might cause side effects but a majority are short term and not serious, adding the vaccine does not change your DNA and only teaches your cells how to trigger an immune response.
An Allentown man is in custody after allegedly lighting a woman on fire Monday afternoon. Police say they were called to the 100 block of North 7th Street and arrived to find a woman running while on fire. An officer extinguished the flames, but the officer and the woman suffered burns. Both the officer and woman were treated and released from the hospital. After the flames were extinguished, police located and arrested Michael Negron, who was in possession of a gas can and lighter. Negron faces numerous charges.
A former Northampton Community College staff member is admitting to being caught with child porn by two students. A year ago, two students spotted an image on Alan West's computer, which appeared to be an explicit photo of a young girl. During the investigation, West told officers he wasn't into child porn, but he later admitted to the college's public safety director that officers would find child pornography on his computer. The 63-year-old West was a part-time assistant in the art department.
There was a deadly police-involved shooting in Pennsburg Tuesday night. Around 7pm, the Upper Perkiomen Police Department received a 911 call from a family member about an angry male relative who left the home with a sword. According to police, an officer responded to the scene and encountered the man. Police say the man threatened the officer with the sword and would not follow commands to drop it. The officer then shot the man, who died at the scene.
Gov. Tom Wolf is renewing the state's opioid disaster declaration again. The governor signed the 13th renewal of his 2018 opioid disaster declaration, which helps Pennsylvania battle against its opioid and heroin epidemic by allowing the state to work outside of typical procedures to treat and prevent opioid use.
Recent storm damage to dunes along the Jersey Shore has officials asking the federal government for help. Acting state Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn LaTourette has written a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regional offices, formally requesting assistance. LaTourette lists several communities that saw significant damage to dunes and beaches.
Last night's Flyers-Capitals game was postponed after two more Flyers were placed on the NHL's COVID protocol list. Captain Claude Giroux and defenseman Justin Braun were added to the list Tuesday. They join defenseman Travis Sanheim who was sidelined for the same reason on Sunday.
