There's a new record for reported COVID-19 cases in Pennsylvania. State health officials reported 4361 new cases of coronavirus across the commonwealth. That brings the statewide total to 238,657 since the pandemic began. 62 new coronavirus-related deaths were also reported Tuesday. Pennsylvania's total now sits at 9086.
Nearly all 50 states are now on New Jersey's coronavirus travel advisory list after two more were added Tuesday. Maine and New Hampshire are the most recent states to be put on the list, which means anyone traveling from a total of 45 states and territories are being asked to self-isolate for 14 days after returning to New Jersey.
New Jersey's governor says the state saw social-distancing and mask-wearing going by the boards as nights grew later at restaurants around the state and Phil Murphy says that has led to coming restrictions. On MSNBC Murphy says by closing indoor dining at 10 o'clock each night, the hope is to eliminate the kind of atmosphere where people are drinking and becoming less mindful of taking precautions. "We're fine if you're outdoors. We're fine if you're doing take out. But indoors were becoming spreading events. We're pleading with people to fight back against pandemic fatigue. Everybody's got it. Who could blame you?", Murphy says. The governor says it appears a pending coronavirus vaccine means it's another six months to keep people healthy until that vaccine becomes widely available.
COVID-19 has made its way to the Philadelphia Eagles organization. The team says a member of its coaching staff has contracted the virus. That individual and any of his close contacts are self-isolating.
Pennsylvania's Department of Health is announcing the state's first flu-related death of the season. Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine says there have been nearly 400 confirmed flu cases thus far. The person who died was between the age of 50-and-64.
Police surrounded an apartment building in Allentown for hours overnight. Police were called to the 400 block of North 22nd Street just after midnight after reports of a man inside an apartment yelling and appearing to be distraught. An armored police vehicle was brought to the scene, and police used loudspeakers to try to talk to someone inside. Residents were told to stay in their homes during the incident, which ended around 5 o'clock this morning. Police say it was a domestic issue of some sort, but aren't releasing further details.
A local judge has passed away unexpectedly. District Judge Wayne Maura died Monday. Maura had been a judge since 2005. Maura's cases are being reassigned to other judges. There are currently no plans for filling his seat. Maura's father, Joseph, was also a district judge, serving for 36 years.
Former Lehigh County Commissioner Dean Browning is trending on Twitter for a series of tweets Tuesday. Yesterday, Twitter users started speculating Browning, who is white, created fake accounts to spread pro-Trump messages after he posted a comment claiming he was a "black, gay man" on his own page. The full tweet from Browning said that as a black, gay man he has had a better life with Donald Trump as president than with former President Barack Obama. Browning followed up that tweet by saying he was quoting one of his followers and apologizing for not providing context.
Joe Torsella is conceding the state treasurer's race. The Democratic incumbent lost his re-election bid against Republican Stacy Garrity, in what many observers call an upset. In a statement, Torsella said public service is a privilege and not an entitlement.
As America remembers and thanks its veterans today, several places are closed. The postal service is closed for the day, as are most banks and non-essential government offices.
Ahead of Veterans Day, Pennsylvania's Department of Military and Veterans Affairs has launced PA VETConnect. Major Gen. Anthony Carrelli is Pennsylvania's adjutant general. "There are countless organizations out there that all work together to pull the load to help serve the nearly 800,000 veterans in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania," Carrelli says. PA VETConnect hopes to link the state's nearly 800,000 veterans to the best resources to serve their needs and to expand referral capabilities for those vets.
New Jersey is clarifying when and how educators can receive unemployment benefits. Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation Tuesday with a goal of protecting adjunct professors and other employees in education. The bill would require employers to notify the Department of Labor at least ten days before the academic term ends if staffers won't be promised a job, making employees eligible to file for unemployment. Advocates say adjunct professors make up at least 75-percent of faculty in higher education and deserve the same benefits as other public workers.
The Philadelphia 76ers are getting ready for next season and now have a new uniform to wear when it arrives. The 76ers unveiled its 2020-21 City Edition uniform Tuesday, designed in part by star Ben Simmons. It ties in red, white and blue on the top with the word "Philadelphia" running on the front underneath an image of Boathouse Row. The historic Liberty Bell is on the waistband and it's the first all-black team jersey since 2009.
