Tragedy on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Five people have been killed and 60 more have been injured in an accident in Westmoreland County. Stephen Limani is with the State Police and describes what apparently happened. "As they were traveling on that bus, it was headed on a downhill grade and the bus was unable to negotiate a corner. That bus went up an embankment, rolled over and then was struck by two tractor-trailers. Another tractor-trailer came and collided with those two tractor-trailers and there was another passenger car that was also involved in this crash," Limani says. The tour bus was heading to Ohio fro New Jersey. Investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what caused the pileup.
The Diocese of Allentown has removed a priest from ministry and barred him from diocesan school events and school property as well. It comes after 70-year-old Monsignor Thomas Derzack, pastor of St. Nicholas Parish in Walnutport, was allegedly seen taking pictures from behind wrestlers competing at Bethlehem Catholic High School last month. The pictures were taken without the boy's knowledge and were reported by a bystander who saw the photos being taken and reported it to police. Officers say the pictures were inappropriate but didn't meet the standards of a crime. An independent diocese board will review Derzack's behavior.
An Alburtis man is dead after a fiery crash in Berks County Sunday night. The single-vehicle crash happened just after 7 o'clock in Longswamp Township. 46-year-old Jonathan Miller was killed when his vehicle ran off the road, hit a tree and became engulfed in flames.
An industrial property in Northampton County has been damaged by a Sunday night fire. The fire broke out in a large building at the Portland Steel property in the 300 block of North Delaware Avenue around 7:30 p.m. Crews from several fire departments were able to get most of the flames under control by about 9:30 p.m., but firefighters continued to battle hot spots as smoke surrounded the building. There are no reports of injuries and officials have not said what may have caused the massive fire.
No one is injured after a house fire in the Poconos Sunday night. Fire crews responded to the fire in Hamilton Township around 6 o'clock last night. Seven people who lived there all made it out safely. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Great Allentown Fair has announced another Grandstand show and it's a biggie.
Superstar Carrie Underwood will be back at the Grandstand on Friday, September 4th for the third time. Underwood previously headlined the show in 2007 and 2015. Tickets go on sale Friday morning at 10 o'clock.
Former Bucks County Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick has died at the age of 56. Fitzpatrick served four terms in Congress between 2005 and 2016. The Republican was first elected in 2004, but lost the U.S. House seat in 2006. He ran again in 2010 and reclaimed the seat, where he won re-election in 2012 and 2014. Fitzpatrick retired in 2016. The cause of his death has not been released.
For the first time in its history, beer is being sampled during the Pennsylvania Farm Show. A different brewery will be at the tasting booth in the Main Hall each day for the run of the show. The craft beer industry generates more than $5.75 billion for Pennsylvania's economy.
Visitors to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst are going to need added clearance following heightened security measures. After threats of retaliation were made by Iran following a U.S. drone strike which killed a top Iranian general, the New Jersey military base says its "Trusted Traveler Program" has been suspended. Until further notice, anyone seeking to visit will now need to bring a government form of identification and will then be vetted through a criminal background check before receiving a pass.
The Philadelphia Eagles season ended Sunday night in a 17-9 loss to Seattle. Early in the game, Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz sustained a concussion and did not return. Head coach Doug Pederson says he feels for his star quarterback who was in his first playoff game. "I'm disappointed for him because I wanted this for him. A lot of teammates did too. We battled through a lot. We'll learn from it," Pederson says. Josh McCown replaced Wentz and played well, going 18-of-24 but couldn't lead them into the end zone.
