Both Pennsylvania senators have issued statements after the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. In a statement, Republican Pat Toomey says, "Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was a coward who killed thousands of defenseless men, women and children. His death makes the world a safer place for Americans and our allies. The fight against ISIS will continue until this terrorist group is eliminated." In a tweet, Democrat Bob Casey says, "The death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is a victory for the security of our nation and world and reflects the true heroism and valor of our special forces and intelligence community. We owe them a debt of gratitude for their bravery and service in our fight against terrorism."
Rabbi Jeffrey Myers survived the Tree of Life synagogue massacre last October 27th. At a remembrance ceremony Sunday on the one-year anniversary of the tragedy, Myers spoke. "The love that continues to pour in from across the world reassures me that the vast majority of humanity unquestionably rejects the actions of this perpetrator," Myers says. Eleven people were murdered and another seven wounded in the attack on the Pittsburgh synagogue one year ago yesterday. Gov. Tom Wolf was among those who attended the ceremony inside Pittsburgh's Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall.
The deaths of an elderly Warren County, NJ couple are being investigated. Joyanne and Frank Warner, both 73 years old, were both found dead inside their Peregrine Drive home late Sunday afternoon. Police are only saying the deaths appear to be an isolated incident.
A high school football player from Schuylkill County may be heading toward recovery following a potentially crippling injury. Jaden Leiby, quarterback for the North Schuylkill High School Spartans, suffered a neck injury while playing against Pottsville High School Friday night. He was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in critical condition. However, Leiby reportedly came out of surgery Sunday with fractured vertebrae but his spinal cord is intact. It remains possible that if the swelling goes down, sensation may return to his lower body.
New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez will be on the Jersey Shore today demanding the federal government better protect future flood victims. Menendez will be at the home of a Toms River family whom he originally visited following the reconstruction of their home following its destruction during Superstorm Sandy. He'll meet with other Sandy survivors to tell Congress to take action to enact reforms at the federal level that would better serve flood survivors and remove hurdles toward recovery.
The Philadelphia Eagles needed a win and they got one Sunday afternoon in Buffalo, beating the Bills 31-13. Coach Doug Pederson says it was a team win. "I told them I was proud of them and how they handled their business in the last week with all the distractions and how they put that stuff away and just do their jobs. This is really a great team win and I told them that after the game," Pederson says. The Eagles move to 4-4 while the Bills slip to 5-2.
