A Lehigh County toddler is expected to survive after accidentally shooting himself over the holiday weekend. Police in Whitehall Township are investigating how a two-year-old shot himself at a home on Springmill Road Monday morning. The toddler remains hospitalized in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries. Police are investigating how many people were in the home at the time of the shooting and how the toddler came into contact with the gun.
Hundreds turned out for Labor Day parades and fairs across the region despite a little interference from Mother Nature. The annual Labor Day picnic in Northampton drew several hundred people, including members from about 40 unions. Union officials had reason to celebrate as they reported high membership rates this year.
Cottingham Stadium in Easton is nearly a century old and it's about to receive some major renovations. The Easton Area School Board meets this week to review bids for work on the stadium, which includes improved lighting. Total costs are expected to reach between $14 and $15 million. If the new lights are approved, the stadium could also hold games for the Bethlehem Steel FC soccer team.
This week, Lower Macungie Township will decide whether they'll place a library tax to a public vote. The tax money would keep the library funded without having to request money from the township every year. In the last two years, the library has received $500,000 from the township, which makes up a little more than three-fourths of the library's revenue. The amount of the proposed tax has yet to be decided.
An advisory committee has been set up to study how to enact ideas from a South Whitehall community survey that supports environmental programs such as banning plastic bags. The survey shows residents support eliminating plastic bags and plastic straws by major retailers. The committee will make recommendations to township officials. Any ban would not take effect for a year under a measure passed by the state legislature.
A legendary Lehigh Valley voice died over the Labor Day weekend. Former WAEB personality, program director and general manager Jeff Frank died unexpectedly Saturday at his Schnecksville home at the age of 70. Frank spent 25 years at WAEB, beginning when he was still in high school.
An "active shooter" alert went out at Villanova University on Monday, but authorities didn't find any threat. Radnor police say a student reported hearing gunshots from inside St. Monica's Hall at around 5:30 Monday afternoon, which triggered the alert from campus security. Both Radnor and campus police swept the dormitory and said the report was unfounded.
State police are remembering a retired explosives-detecting canine who passed away. Jan was a Dutch shepherd who served Troop H starting in 2008 until his retirement in 2016. In a Facebook post, troopers say he lived out his retirement running the fields in Warren County.
Remnants of Hurricane Dorian could bring tropical storm conditions off the Jersey Shore this week. The National Weather Service says that the storm is expected to move northward skirting the Atlantic coastal states this week, losing strength along the way. By Friday, what's left of a weakened Dorian is predicted by then to be downgraded to tropical storm status with maximum sustained winds up to 73-miles and hour.
Passengers at the Newark airport were left scrambling as an employee sounded an alarm following a suspicious interaction with two men Monday night. Port Authority officials report around 200 passengers in Terminal A "self-evacuated" on a ramp, some scattering across the tarmac amid the confusion. The chaos began around 8 o'clock last night when two men fled the area after an Alaskan Airlines employee approached them, prompting the employee to hit an alarm. The evacuated passengers were able to return to the airport, while officials say the two men are not in custody and that there is no threat at the airport.
