A Sunday night shooting has left one man dead and another injured in the Poconos. Police were called to a gated community in Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County around 10:45 last night for reports of shots fired. Police found 20-year-old Daniel Santana shot to death in a crashed vehicle at Pembrook and Winter drives. Several 911 callers reported a man knocking on doors for help after the shooting and crash. Police tracked down the man, identified as Angel Rodriguez Martinez, who told officers he was a passenger in the vehicle when someone fired shots at them. Rodriguez Martinez had minor injuries and did not require medical care. Police said no arrests have been made, but they do not believe this was a random act of violence.
A child is in the hospital after being struck by lightning in Bethlehem. The unidentified victim, described only as a boy, was found last night along Argus Court after being struck. The child was reportedly conscious when emergency responders arrived. He was taken to St. Luke's University Hospital Bethlehem. His current condition has not been released.
A man drowned in the Beltzville State Park lake over the weekend. 24 members of the Lehighton Fire Department responded Sunday to the lake with five rescue vessels, but park officials say the victim could not be saved. The victim has only been identified as a 30-year-old man who went under while attempting to swim out to a child on a float.
An Upper Macungie Township man is facing charges after being caught with a stolen gun in Allentown. Police say Barry Singleton-Evans has been jailed on weapons possession and possessing stolen property charges. Investigators say they saw Singleton-Evans stash the gun under a car on North Seventh Street when he saw them patrolling the area.
After saying he wouldn't allow the gay pride flag to be flown at Reading City Hall, Mayor Wally Scott has changed his mind. In an announcement made on his Facebook page, Scott said his change of heart came after talking with someone he called a prominent woman who described to him when she told her mother she was gay. "Does God make mistakes. She said her mother grabbed onto her and held her and hugged her and said 'God doesn't make mistakes,'" Scott said. Scott initially balked at flying the gay pride flag at city hall, calling it a symbol of a political movement.
A Luzerne County school district is catching serious flak after threatening that parents who owe money for their children's lunches could have their kids taken away. The Wyoming Valley West School District recently sent a letter to families that alleges owing money could land families in Dependency Court, which could result in children being removed from their home and placed in foster care. Sen. Bob Casey responded over the weekend that the letters should never have happened and that he feels the school district has a responsibility to find a suitable way to collect the funds. School board members have since said a non-threatening letter will be sent out this week.
One of the people trying to become our next president says the current one is worse than a racist. "He's actually using racist tropes and racial language for political gain, trying to use it as a weapon to divide our nation against itself," New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker said on CNN's "State of the Union." Booker compared President Trump to segregationist and former Alabama Gov. George Wallace.
Major League Baseball welcomed six new members to its Hall of Fame Sunday, including the late Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay. His widow, Brandy, spoke on her husband's behalf. "Roy was blessed in his life and in his career to have some perfect moments but I believe they were only possible because of the man he strived to be, his teammates that he was and the people he was so blessed to be on the field with," Halladay said. Roy Halladay died in a plane crash in November 2017.
