Pennsylvania State Police have taken a woman into custody following an hours-long standoff that began Sunday night in North Whitehall Township. State police were called to the 2500 block of Rising Sun Road about 7:30pm Sunday. State police were calling over a loudspeaker for a woman who reportedly barricaded herself inside to come out and surrender a gun. The state police Special Emergency Response Team was deployed, and authorities reportedly used tear gas to end the standoff which lasted about six hours. There is no word yet from state police about the suspect's identity or what may have sparked the incident.
Police are looking for tips on who shot a teenager riding his bike through Allentown over the weekend. Police say the teen was riding early Sunday near 5th and Linden streets when he thought he heard fireworks. The boy then realized he had been shot in the arm and he then took himself to an area hospital where he's being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the Allentown Police Department.
A man wanted for raping a child more than a decade ago in Easton is back in Northampton County to face charges. The FBI brought defendant Cristobal Ayala back from El Salvador over the weekend and placed him in Northampton County Prison on 15 counts related to child sexual assault. Ayala allegedly assaulted a female victim under the age of 13 back in 2006 and has been in custody in San Salvador since November 2017, where he's been awaiting extradition.
An autopsy is taking place today to determine how a 19-year-old Allentown man died in a car crash over the weekend. Jose Guzman was pronounced dead at the scene early Sunday morning after apparently losing control while exiting for Cedar Crest Boulevard from Route 22. The accident happened just moments after Whitehall Township police discontinued a pursuit. Police aren't commenting other than to say the crash is under investigation.
Pennsylvania Auditor General Eugene DePasquale is confirming his run for Congress. In a tweet sent Sunday afternoon, DePasquale said he will run for the central Pennsylvania seat currently held by Republican Congressman Scott Perry.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is saying the nearly $39 billion budget he signed into law will strengthen middle-class priorities, despite that it lacks his proposal to raise taxes on millionaires. Murphy signed the law Sunday and took to social media to praise how it also invests in public education and New Jersey Transit while providing property tax relief. The governor did add that he used his line-item veto authority to eliminate more than $48 million in spending and that he feels the budget protects millionaires, the gun lobby, opioid manufacturers and big businesses. He authorized the budget only hours ahead of a deadline that if missed could have shut down state parks and beaches over the Independence Day holiday.
The minimum wage is going up for some New Jersey residents today. The wage is increasing from $8.85 to $10 an hour. However, the hike doesn't apply to people working at businesses with five or fewer employees, while workers at farms and seasonal businesses won't see a bump in pay until January. On January 1st, the minimum wage will jump again to $11 an hour.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is saying a dozen New Jerseyans are suffering from Salmonella after eating Mexican papayas. The CDC says a total of 62 people from eight states, including Pennsylvania, have been sickened by papayas imported from Mexico and that no one should be eating or serving the fruit in those eight states. Pennsylvania has had four cases reported so far.
The Golden Nugget in Atlantic City is closing its nightclub next month. The space will be renovated into a new amenity for Golden Nugget. The Haven Nightclub was where Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera allegedly assaulted his girlfriend in May and where Atlantic City Mayor Frank Gilliam reportedly got into a brawl last November.
New Jersey Democrat senator and 2020 presidential candidate Cory Booker doesn't think former Vice President Joe Biden is going a good job of uniting the country. On NBC's 'Meet the Press,' Booker said it's hard for Biden to lead our country forward when he can't discuss his own developments when it comes to race. Booker says it makes it harder to deal with the past and "rise to a common cause and common future." According to Booker, the last few months have shown Biden's "inability to talk candidly about mistakes he's made," and "things he could have done better."
J.T. Realmuto will be the lone representative for the Philadelphia Phillies in the All-Star Game in Cleveland. Realmuto is batting .265 with 10 home runs on the season.
