Federal authorities say they've seized more than 16 tons of cocaine worht more than $1 billion from shipping containers at a port in Philadelphia. The shipping containers were found on board a cargo vessel that previously traveled from Chile, Panama and the Bahamas. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Philadelphia is calling the seizure the largest in the region's history. The seizure weighs about 3300 pounds and officials say there could still be even more cocaine to be found somewhere on the ship.
Two men were shot inside a home in Allentown Tuesday evening. Police were called around 7:30 p.m. to the 500 block of West Gordon Street for a report of shots fired. They found two 19-year-old men with gunshot wounds. Both were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. A preliminary investigation suggests someone else shot the men. The investigation is ongoing.
The Commonwealth is sending some cash to Northampton Community College with the intention of making it easier for people to find jobs in the Lehigh Valley. The nearly $200,000 grant is slated to help teach entry-level manufacturing skills to unemployed and underemployed workers. The funding will support the training of 60 people who join the program. Gov. Tom Wolf says the money will help the college guarantee that Lehigh Valley manufacturing companies will find the talen they need to fill their open positions.
The Lehigh County Coroner says a Bucks County police chief died from natural causes. Perkasie Police Chief Steven Hillias died Sunday at Lehigh Valley Hospital. An autopsy performed Tuesday determined there were no suspicious reasons behind his death. Hillias was the father of two and had been Perkasie's police chief since 2014.
A Schuylkill County man is behind bars in Carbon County after being arrested for a sexual assault dating back nearly 30 years. Jim Thorpe police have jailed David Hunsicker on charges of raping a mentally impaired victim, raping a person under the age of 13 and corruption of minors. Police say Hunsicker committed sexual assaults between 1992 and 1996 against a female victim between the ages of five and nine.
A measure requiring drivers to remove ice and snow from their vehicles before driving ia a step closer to law. Senate Bill 114 moved through the Senate Transportation Committee Tuesday and is off to the full chamber for a potential vote. The measure would give drivers 24 hours after a storm to clean their vehicles off. This bill would increase the penalty to $1500 if ice or snow from a vehicle strikes another car or pedestrian, causing injury.
Bill Cosby is reportedly thriving in prison. Andrew Wyatt, a spokesman for the disgraced actor convicted of sexual assault, said Cosby is doing "extremely well" behind bars. He apparently gives motivational speeches to crowds of up to 200 men at the maximum security prison he's locked up in near Philadelphia. The 81-year-old is also constantly working out and has reportedly dropped down to 187 pounds.
Supporters of dairy farming in Pennsylvania are asking for more support from state lawmakers. At a rally at the state Capitol Tuesday, the executive director of the PA Dairyman's Association, Dave Smith, says they need whole milk available again in school across Pennsylvania. Right now, only one-percent or skim milk is available and Smith says if kids don't like the taste they stop drinking any milk at home at all. The group is also asking for support for a measure that would stop calling milk alternatives, like almond or cashew milk, from being labeled as milk.
State lawmakers are moving quickly on a new plan to expand medical marijuana in New Jersey. The state Assembly Appropriations Committee approved the bill Tuesday by a vote of eight-to-one, with one abstention. The bill revises requirements to authorize and access medicinal pot while establishing a regulatory commission and legal protections for both caregivers and patients while revising permit requirements. State Assembly leadership had put the bill on hold earlier this month over concerns Gov. Phil Murphy would veto it without changes first being made. The legislation approved Tuesday included some of Murphy's suggestions, but not all.
New Jersey officials warn that two Ocean County beaches may be unsafe for swimming due to unsafe levels of bacteria. The Department of Environmental Protection has posted that samples taken at the New Jersey and Stockton bay beaches in Long Beach Township exceed the healthy water quality standard. No beaches in New Jersey are currently closed, but exposure to the bacteria present at the spots in Long Beach can cause a variety of serious infections.
New Jersey's Department of Health is warning that a person infected with measles recently passed through Newark Liberty International Airport. The traveler arrived at Terminal B from Tokyo on May 29th and then departed to Quebec, Canada, from Terminal A. Anyone who has been at Newark Liberty International Airport between May 29th at 5pm and May 30th at 3:30pm may have been exposed and could develop symtoms as late as June 20th if infected. People possibly exposed are urged to contact a health care provider in advance of going for medical treatment so preparations to contain the virus can be made.
Some New Jersey boaters are never going to forget their day at sea Monday. Jeff Crilly was with a few people in a small boat off the Jersey Shore when a giant shark swam up to them. They were about 30 miles southeast of the Manasquan Inlet when the animal came over to say hello. Crilly post video of the encounter and posted it on Facebook, with the clip now going viral on social media. The shark, which appears to be a great white shark, is estimated to be about 2000 pounds.
Former Phillies and Mets star Lenny Dykstra has his smile back. "All night, all morning...I just found my teeth. Believe it," Dykstra said in the video. Dykstra says he went to eat at a New Jersey sandwich shop last weekend and removed his $80,000 dentures and put them in a napkin while eating his sandwich. He left the restaurant without the teeth and when he returned hours later they were nowhere to be found. Dykstra says he spent the next nine hours digging through the dumpster before he found them.
Kevin Hayes decided not to opt for free agency, agreeing to a seven-year, $50 million deal with the Philadelphia Flyers Tuesday. The team also acquired veteran defenseman Justin Braun from the San Jose Sharks for a pair of picks in Friday's draft.
